about

Welcome to my album Pedal Onwards. Come in and make yourself at home. Before you continue reading, there’s a couple of things you need to know. Firstly, the songs on this album are mainly about two things. The first is my Dad. The second is cycling.
Now, before we continue, there’s something important that you should know. In 2017, my Dad died of a heart attack whilst riding his bike. No one was expecting it, he wasn’t ill, and there were no signs at all. One minute he was with us, and the next he was gone. When you lose someone very
important to you, life can sometimes feel like that moment when your parents are trying to tune the radio in the car, but everything sounds fuzzy. You know how it ought to sound, but somehow you just can’t find the right channel anymore.

I suppose this album is me, re-tuning my radio, so things sound right again. My way of doing that has been writing songs about my Dad. Over the course of these 12 songs, you’ll get to meet him. I hope you like him as much as I did.

Now, the second thing that you should know is that my dad loved cycling. For him, riding a bike wasn’t just a hobby or exercise, it was a whole way of life. Our garage was completely filled with bikes, bike parts and bike tools. On weekends, the whole family would go on cycle rides together, or else take part in cycling races, which my Dad had often helped to organise. For our holidays in the summer we went cycle-camping on tandem bicycles round Europe, and even when my Mum, my brother and I would go shopping in town, Dad would cycle in to meet us - he never missed a chance to ride his bike.

Back to that fuzzy radio. The other thing that I found helpful when all I could hear was radio static, was riding my bike. Every time I was in the saddle, looking down at my feet pushing the pedals round and round, I felt like Dad was there with me. It made me feel calm and helped me to realise that, eventually, things would be OK again. Different, but OK.

I hope you enjoy this cycle ride through my childhood with me and my Dad as your guides.
